The Inca sites visited in Peru
Choquequirao Vilcabamba is a 15th and 16th century Inca settlement nestled between the mountains of the spectacular Vilcabamba range. Our hike begins in the town of Cachora, a beautiful town next to Aguas Caliente. The trek to Choquequirao passes through the Vilcabamba mountain range, descending into the Apurimac River Canyon. For those with time, the Choquequirao-Vilcabamba trek is a fantastic alternative to hiking the more well-known Inca Trail, giving you a more exclusive view of Peru’s cultural and natural highlights. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Pumasillo and Salkantay mountain peaks, and descend to the base of impressive, deep canyons carved out by the Apurimac and Blanco rivers. And, of course, you’ll gain more than enough time during the hike to get a sweeping view of Machu Pichu, the area’s tourist highlight by far. Of the archaeological complexes that you will visit during this strenuous but rewarding hike, Choquequirao is the main site, although it is relatively unknown to tourists.
Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca.
We will pick you up at your accommodation to start a trip of about 5 hours by car to the town of Cachora. In this place we will make a short break to get everything ready, so that we can start the walk. The trekking will take us to a place called Capuliyoc, where we will take a break to rest and have lunch. After this relaxation, we will continue the walk for 5 more hours to Chiquisca, the first camp and where we will spend the first night.
Day 2: Chiquisca – Santa Rosa – Choquequirao.
We will get up very early to have breakfast and get energy for the day's walk. Our first visit will be to Rosalina beach, on the Apurímac river. We will rest before continuing the walk, this time uphill for 4 hours. We will arrive at Santa Rosa, at an altitude of 2100 m, where we will have our lunch and we will be able to rest from the climb. Afterwards, we will walk for 3 more hours to the Choquequirao archaeological complex. We will have the first views of the ruins and we will be able to camp on some of its platforms, where you can see the citadel freely. During the night, we will have dinner and rest.
Day 3: Choquequirao – Santa Rosa – Chiquisca.
We will start the day early with breakfast, and then make a 2-hour visit to the archaeological complex. During the tour, the guide will give us some information about the place and explain its importance to the empire. After touring and taking pictures, we will return to the camp to take our things and begin the descent to Santa Rosa. We will arrive at the place to have lunch and rest a bit, before continuing the trekking to Rosalina beach and then to Chiquisca, where we will have dinner and rest.
Day 4: Chiquisca – Cachora – Cusco.
We will start this last day with breakfast, as is customary, and we will walk towards Cachora. We will arrive at lunchtime, so that we can enjoy a moment with the group before taking the vehicle that will take us back to the city of Cusco, where our activity ends.
